Environmental stewardship is extremely important to us. We want our children to have access to the same natural resources and thriving Idaho wilderness that we enjoy today. As farmers, we depend on healthy soil, water, insects, native plants, and wildlife to grow healthy, resilient crops. In order to protect and encourage native pollinators, we grow native plants, along with numerous nectar-producing flowers and herbs. Whenever possible, we purchase organic, heirloom, and open-pollinated seeds. We maintain our soil health through crop rotation, compost and manure use, cover cropping, and regular soil testing. In addition to encouraging biodiversity and natural systems, we also strive to reduce our fossil fuel use. While we rely on petroleum for certain aspects of our business, we are always looking for ways to shrink our carbon footprint. Much of the work on our farm is done by hand, without the use of machinery and we strive to buy local, repurposed, and/or used materials and products.
River City Farm does not use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers and follows organic production practices. In 2016, we got our Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) certification. CNG is an awesome alternative certification to USDA Organic. We chose to certify our farm CNG because, though we have always followed USDA Organic standards, the cost associated with certifying organic has always been prohibitive. CNG farmers follow the same standards as organic certified farmers do, but CNG certification requires a much lower yearly fee and relies on peer inspections and farmer to farm transparency. We are honored to be a part of the CNG community. For more information about CNG, visit their website: http://www.cngfarming.org/. In addition, because we are a small, community based farm, anyone wishing to purchase from us can simply visit the farm and check out our production practices for themselves.
We want River City Farm to be a resource for our community. Farms are great places to exercise, learn, play, eat, and get in touch with the natural world. Our farm is open to visitors and volunteers, kids and customers. We are also interested in collaborating with schools, non-profits, and other organizations to help create a more vibrant, nourished community. To ensure we provide fresh, local produce to anyone who wants it, we have a volunteer for veggies program. This program allows folks to come out to the farm on designated days and learn about sustainable farming, while earning fresh produce at the same time! We are so grateful to be a part of the Lewiston community. Please contact us if you have any interest in being involved with RCF. Can’t wait to see you at the farm!
Buying local not only reduces fossil fuel use, it also keeps money in the hands of community members. We rely on local consumers buy our produce and we know that local businesses rely on us to purchase their goods and services. River City Farm is proud to be one of Lewiston’s local, family-owned businesses.
